Due to the forecasted weather, we will be having "Read Club" this week instead of "Run Club". Please make sure your child comes to school with a book in their backpack!

This week we are featuring a message from the best school nurse around: The one and only Suzanne Sharp, LVN!

I am so blessed to be the nurse at Westside. I have been a nurse for almost 30 years, and this is my 15th year as a school nurse. I started out as an EMT volunteering with Alvin Area EMS and Travis County Fire Control, and worked in a nursing home and an allergy/asthma clinic before coming to Leander ISD. My husband Barry and I are now empty nesters and will celebrate 35 years together this fall. We serve in music and marriage ministry at our church. In my spare time I love reading, especially to our grandson, knitting or crochet, and ancestry research.

This is a busy time of year in the clinic as flu season is upon us. There are lots of other viruses and illnesses that are present at any given time. In addition to frequent hand washing, another strategy to stay healthy is to get adequate sleep (8 to 10 hours per night). This helps your immune system work properly.

Please remember that students will be sent home if they have a fever of 100°F or above or any other potentially contagious symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, etc.). They will need to remain home until symptom free without the use of medications for twenty-four (24) hours.

Stay healthy, Rockets!
